Betting Limit
We will use 3/6 limit as our example for Limit Omaha bet. The first person left
of the dealer is forced to make a $2.00 bet and the second person left of the dealer
is forced to make a $3.00 bet, these are blinds. They are forced bets to
ensure there is action each time the cards are dealt. Then you go counter clockwise
around the table each player has a choice to call raise in
increments of $3.00 or fold with a maximum of 3 raises of the big blind or a
total of 4 bets this hold true threw all betting rounds. The next round of
betting comes after the "flop" this is another $3.00 bet, each player may check
or bet if the pot hasn't been bet if it has they may raise or fold. After the
turn and on the river the bet is doubled to $6.00 with the same rules as the
previous rounds.
Pot Limit
There are the same "blinds" in pot limit as there are in limit. You are allowed
to bet anything over the blind with a maximum of what is in the pot. The minimum
amount that you may raise is what ever the raise amount is i.e.. someone bets
$5.00 you must raise a minimum of $5.00 and a maximum of the amount of money in
the pot. If there was $5.00 in the pot and no callers between you and the bettor
you may bet $15.00. The way to calculate this is:
$5.00 pot +
$5.00 bet +
$5.00 your call =
$15.00 pot and maximum raise.
Hi-Low
You may play Hi-Low in with limit and pot limit betting structure. The only
difference is the pot is split between the Hi and the Low. There must be three
cards less than eight that do not pair in order for there to be a qualifying low
hand. The way to figure a low hand is to start at the top card and count
backwards.
8-7-4-3-2
would be better than
8-7-5-3-2
The best possible low hand is
5-4-3-2-A
Even though this is a straight it is also the lowest possible sequence of cards
there is.
Texas Hold ‘em
The object of Texas Hold ‘em is to get the best possible 5-card poker hand with
ANY combination of your two personal “hole cards” (only you can see and use) and
the five “community” (cards everyone can see and use) on the board. You may use
1 of your personal cards and 4 “community” cards, both of your personal cards
and 3 “community” cards or just play all 5 “community” cards (‘play the board’)
Texas Hold ‘em begins by each player being dealt two “hole cards” (your personal
cards) that only they can see. This is followed by a round of betting. Next the
“community cards” are dealt face-up. One card is burned and three cards are
dealt or “flopped” on the board for everyone to see and use. This is followed by
another round of betting. Then another card is burned and a fourth “community
card is dealt (this card is called ‘4th street’ or the ‘turn’ card). Another
round of betting occurs. Then another card is burned and the last “community”
card is dealt (called ‘5th Street’ or the ‘River’) and the last round of betting
occurs and the best ‘5-card’ poker hand wins.
Betting
Limit vs. No-Limit Texas Hold ‘em
The betting structure is determined by the rules of the game. In the first two
rounds all the bets are equal to a number called the ‘minimum’ bet, and in the
last two rounds all bets and raises are equivalent to the ‘maximum’ bet. The
maximum bet is normally twice the amount of the minimum bet. A Hold ‘em poker
table where the minimum is $5 and the maximum is $10 is called a $5-$10 table.
When the hand begins the player to the immediate left of the dealer places a
mandatory bet equal to half the minimum bet (referred to as the ‘small blind’)
and the player to his/her left places a bet that equals the full amount of the
minimum bet (‘big blind’). These bets are referred to as ‘blinds’ due to the
fact that the players are placing them without first seeing their cards. This
structure of Hold ‘em is referred to as LIMIT Texas Hold ‘em.
In NO-LIMIT Texas Hold ‘em the blinds are the same, this is known as ‘forced
action’. After the blinds are posted the minimum raise is equal to the big
blind, however there is no limit to the amount that is bet. After the first
three (flop) community cards are placed, the minimum bet is the big blind, there
is no maximum bet, however, the minimum raise must be the amount of the previous
bet.
NOTE: One variation to LIMIT Texas Hold ‘em is called ‘Big River’. All the
betting rounds are the same as LIMIT Hold ‘em with the exception of the last
round after the ‘river’ card is dealt. At this point the bet may be up to 5
TIMES the amount of the maximum bet! The only site that we’ve found for this
variation is Victoria's Poker Room.
